Why you can’t give up.

Today’s exhortation 24/04/18

If you’ve been around children, you sometimes get to hear what they say before they speak. Whenever my son hangs around me when I’m eating, I just know he wants some of my food. Sometimes he asks outright, while sometimes he is afraid to ask (in case the answer would be no) so he just hangs around me quietly or strikes a conversation. But whether he asks or not, I hardly say no.

Many times, we get to that point where we can’t pray. All we have is a “little tiny” bit of faith left to just keep hope alive. Other times, both faith and hope seem non-existent and everything looks bleak. I know that feeling. It’s one of despair and hopelessness. You know the word of God, you know His promises yet you struggle to believe right that moment. I have one scripture that is my anchor in those times. Apart from believing God loves me regardless of the situation or circumstances, I have used this scripture as an anchor.

Ephesians 3:20 (NKJV)

20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us

His power within us? That sounds like we must “work hard” to get Him to do for us what we ask of Him. But that’s just not true, because that power is already at work in you by the Holy Spirit once you Have Him living in you. You don’t have to do anything at all! The answer is already found from verse 16 so let’s read in context.

Verse 16-19

16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with POWER through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have POWER, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

The power works that works in us is already given to us and is within us, that’s why from verse 16 we see that that power is made available in our inner being by the Spirit.

So, when you are at the end of the rope and feel you have no hope, as long as you have the Holy Spirit, His power is in you. That power enables God to do more than we ask think or imagine. So, don’t stop asking and when you can’t ask, don’t stop thinking or imagining what you would want to see in your life. Because when you do, that power has no choice but to go to work and cause God to do for you more because He has the capacity to do more and He always does more.

When you can’t ask, please use your imagination and activate the power at work within you.
