Jesus is coming again! And soon
2 Peter 3:11 New International Version
Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives
The entire chapter of 2 Peters 3 is a treatise on the coming of the Lord. Peter starts noting that this is the second time he would write and the purpose of this letter is to stimulate the church to wholesome thinking.
That word stood out for me because it indicates as Christians that we are not just to focus on the fact that Jesus Came or He died or just that He rose but it is necessary to be aware and cognizant of the fact that He will come again. Even though these letters were penned over Two thousand Years ago they are as relevant to us as they are and will be to our children.
He states what will happen in the last days: Scoffers will come and scoff because the message “Jesus is coming” has been told from time. Many scoff in our day. Even in the church, the message is not preached and it is most times ignored but He will come.
In verse 8 and 9, he explains what might seem to man like the slowness of God is actually for our salvation. If Jesus came back now, how many would be ready to meet him or present him something worthy of a great reward?
Verse 10: despite Christ’s desire to see all saved, He will come and He will come like a thief in the night. A thief does not announce to anyone he/she is coming. They come when you are not looking and attempt to take. Christ will come when we are not aware, He will come when we are comfortable. He will come whether we are ready or not.
Peter does not leave us without advise. He asks the question which is our focal verse. As a result of this fact, how then do we behave, how do we act, how do we conduct ourselves?
We are to make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with Christ. We are not to say “It doesn’t matter”. We are to strive to be found without blame. No excuses. How do we make peace with him? By first of all acknowledging we are sinners and we can’t save ourselves, accepting his sacrifice and believing Christ Jesus as Lord. In essence, becoming born again. Once born again, listening to the still small voice of the Holy Spirit and being led by Him and obeying his dictates which leads to peace.
Verse 16 shows another important trait we are to make sure we steer clear of. Even if we don’t understand the scriptures, we are not to distort them as unstable and ignorant people do so to their own destruction. If you do not understand a particular piece of scripture, ask for the Holy Spirits help and guidance and do not attempt to privately interpret or twist what it is saying to suit your own methods.
Peter goes further to say since we have been forewarned, we are make sure we stand on guard in order not to be carried away by lawlessness. Take heed that you do not fall. Don’t assume you will, take an intentional stand not to. Finally he admonishes us to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We do that by praying this as well as studying scripture and spending time with him in order to grow.
As we anticipate the Lord’s coming, let us tell others about Jesus and stand firm in the knowledge that He is coming again.
