Exodus 12:13 King James Version (KJV)

13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.

After giving birth to my first daughter, I started bleeding heavily and had to be wheeled into theatre to resolve this. As I waited for the doctors, my husband started to sing Andrae Crouch’s classic “The blood of Jesus will never lose its power”. I was fascinated because I had never heard it and so I had him teach me and we sang it and sang it until I was wheeled in.

I’m confident that His blood which we pled in our song covered me during the operation which took hours and Jesus’s blood ensured I came out alive, against all odds.

A lot of us grew up hearing the words, “I plead the blood of Jesus”. Some churches said it simply, some chant it, some chant and increase with intensity each time they say it.

What does it mean to plead the blood? What is the blood of Jesus? What has the blood of Jesus has done. Let’s go back to the very beginning.

The Israelites had been slaves in Egypt for over 400 years and on the eve of their departure, God demonstrated his power in the land of Egypt in such a manner that Pharaoh and his people had no choice but to let them go. However, for the Israelites, they escaped the scourge and were delivered mightily.

Exodus 12:7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.

They were asked to produce a spotless lamb and kill it, ensure they take of the blood and strike it on the 2-side posts and the upper door post of the houses. This was a token, a sign to prevent the destroyer from coming in. “When I see the blood, I will pass over you” What assurance! What hope! What a deliverance.

You might wonder, why blood? According to Hebrews 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.” There is only one way to do away with the sin and its effects. It has to be shed blood implying the death of the creature that was slain. I believe this is why primitive tribes practiced cannibalism and why native doctors believe blood has to be shed. Theirs, however, is a wrong application of the true knowledge of Christ.

The Israelites obeyed and not one household that obeyed this instruction lost their firstborn. So how does this apply to me today? The instruction to the Israelites are a type and shadow of the days of Christ and our day. The Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world is Jesus Christ (John 1:29)

Isa 53: 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

This verse accurately represents Jesus before his accusers. (Luke 23:9) Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.

Jesus’s blood was shed and unlike the blood of bulls and goats which had to be shed yearly to cover the sins of men, his blood has purged us completely and granted us his righteousness.

Hebrews 9: 13 & 14 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: 14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

His blood is still living and it speaks. Hebrews 12:24 and to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

Pleading the blood is an act of faith declaring whatever it is His blood has done for us. Plead the blood of Jesus to cleanse your sin, plead the blood to speak peace to a situation, plead the blood of Jesus silently against all accusations, plead the blood of Jesus against sickness. If the blood of lambs could deliver the Israelites with such power, imagine what the blood of Jesus has done and will do on your behalf.
