EXHORTATION 04/04/2018

Hear the words of our Lord, Jesus Christ….

Matthew 12:33-37 NKJV
[33] “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.
[34] Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
[35] A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.
[36] But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.
[37] For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

I remember a hilarious incident when we were in primary school.
This chap had boasted to all who cared to listen that the had cornflakes for breakfast (I guess to feel like a rich kid ), only for him to start vomiting for some reason, and behold, we saw eba with okro soup (apologies for grossing us out).
In retrospect, this illustrates the fact that we can only bring out what we have within.

Like Jesus was telling his audience above, it is out of the abundance of the heart that one speaks. We say out whatever it is we have stored in our spirits, especially in those situations when we don’t have time to think or plan our responses, like in a crisis. We refer to it as “spinal level” response in medical practice.

And what we speak when confronted with situations is important. Our words can either make or mar us, and determine to a very large extent our outcomes.
Remember Joshua’s address to the people of Israel….

Joshua 1:8 NKJV
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

It was quite explicit, the word has to be in their hearts and mouth.

Also, when the Israelites murmured against God….

Numbers 14:27-28 NKJV
[27] “How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who complain against Me? I have heard the complaints which the children of Israel make against Me.
[28] Say to them, ‘As I live,’ says the LORD, ‘just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you’

We need to speak the word of God, His mind and plan for us as revealed in His word. But do we have this word stored in our spirit?
What we do have stored within us can make the difference in a life or death situation many times. It seems rather far fetched to many of us.

I remember a family friend who was in a road traffic accident many years ago. It was a very bad situation and eye witnesses said they had concluded that he was dead. He suddenly burst out reciting scriptures and praying in tongues while unconscious, till he got to the hospital. I witnessed same while he was undergoing some very painful procedures, and he was still unconscious. He continued confessing the word of God. With benefit of hindsight, it was easier for him to have died, given the type of injuries he had. But the word of God in his spirit and his mouth sustained him. And he was even a young secondary school leaver at that time.

So in times of distress and crisis, what comes out of you? What do you have stored within?
Murmuring, negative confessions, descriptions of how bad the situation is, or God’s sure word of promise that never fails?
Check the “library”/store of your spirit today.
Whatever you have there is what the Holy Spirit reminds you of, that is what you bring out when confronted with situations.
And what you say at those times largely determines your outcome.
