Today’s Exhortation 25-May-2018
I kings 17:4 “You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there.”
I kings 17:9 “Get up, go to Zarephath of Sidon, and stay there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.”
Today’s devotional focuses on the prophet Elijah who declared there would be no rain until he says so. His prophecy and declaration affected everyone including himself and he had to receive revelation from God in order for him to be secure and provided for.
1 Kings 17:2 states that a revelation from the Lord came to Elijah. In short, he heard God’s voice and it was specific. “Leave here, Turn Eastwards and hide yourself by the brook Cherith”. A simple sentence and one when obeyed, had sufficient provision for him.
If he had stayed, there would have been no provision, if he had turned westwards or southwards or northwards, nothing would have been there for him! If he had stayed in Cherith for only a day, his provision would have been wasted. He was provided for because he obeyed to the letter.
The amazing thing is the raven brought food that it could have eaten. It eats meat but God instructed it to give a prophet. Amazing! Sometimes the source of our provision is not what we expect.
Once the brook dried up, God did not waste time before giving him further instructions. This shows God is concerned about what concerns us. His prophet needed water and God gave him another instruction; Get up, Go to Zarephath of Sidon and stay there. Why? I have commanded a widow there (not anywhere else) to provide for you.
This is another amazing miracle. Not only did God not use a rich man with plenty to provide for Elijah, he sent him to a most unlikely source and the jar of flour was not exhausted, the jug of oil did not run dry at the word of a prophet. Do not despise God’s sources for your provision.
As I read this chapter, I’m happy because God is concerned about providing for us. We are not to worry or fret as said in Matthew “26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?”
Which of you has worried so much your pots began to cook a pot of Egusi? I’d like to see that miracle. What has ensured provision, is trust in God and obedience. I remember once in university, I had no money, no provisions, nothing. It was afternoon and I was very hungry so I decided to sleep and before sleeping, I declared, Father I am the daughter of a king, I cannot be hungry. I slept so much that a friend who came to visit me could not wake me up. Call it the sleep of rest. I woke up to a huge bunch of bananas she dropped for me and a lovely note. Of course, I ate those bananas immediately.
God always provides, he is concerned about his prophets, his daughters, his princesses and his children. Worrying about the method of His provision is the devils way to make us believe God is not concerned about us. This is not true. Let us look back to several years ago when you had such a great need, look at yourself now, has God not provided that need and many more.
What are you trusting (not worrying) God to bring your way? Go to him and thank Him for His provision, for the fact that He has never let you down and never will. Hands off any strange means and listen to him. Be willing to obey him when he says “Stop” or if he says “Go!” Your provision is ‘there’ as Elijah’s was and only if you are ‘there’ would you see his provision.
As Abraham declared, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” Gen 22:14 so it shall be with us as we obey and are found in God’s ‘there’.
