Years ago, as a single lady arriving in a new land, the elders of the land offered me an advice. ‘There are no good husbands in the UK, Omobola, you just need to find a married man who will take care of you. He will spend the evenings with you and go back home to his wife, at least, you will have a man, this land can be lonely. With all your qualifications and age, most men will not want to marry you.
Those words didnt reach the ground before i replied them……’if there is only one godly man remaining in this land, I will marry him’
I said that with so much confidence that it kept them quiet and they could not discuss the issue any further.
Fast forward to two years later, I had met the godly man, one that is so godly that even my parents asked me to make sure that he didn’t have anything to hide as to why he was still single at his age. It was too good to be true.
One of the most challenging things about trusting God is that you have to contend with those who are meant to believers but who don’t believe and they water down your enthusiasm and deflate your floating and soaring faith. If you are not careful they will drag you down. Their words are more plausible because they are brethren. If they were plain unbelievers, you would have had your guards out about them. But as believers, they can persuade you easily, if you are not strong .
I saw one example in the bible and I decided to share the story with you my sisters.
Joshua 14:6-9, 12-14
One day some men from the tribe of Judah went to Joshua at Gilgal. Among them was Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite. He said to Joshua, “You remember what the Lord said at Kadesh Barnea when he was speaking to the prophet Moses about you and me. Moses, the Lord ’s servant, sent me to look at the land where we were going. I was forty years old then. When I came back, I told Moses what I thought about the land. The other men who went with me frightened the people, but I fully believed the Lord would allow us to take the land. So that day Moses promised me, ‘The land where you went will become your land, and your children will own it forever. I will give you that land because you fully believed in the Lord , my God.’ So give me the mountain country the Lord promised me that day long ago. Back then you heard that the Anakite people lived there and the cities were large and well protected. But now with the Lord helping me, I will force them out, just as the Lord said.” Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him the city of Hebron as his own. Hebron still belongs to the family of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite because he had faith and obeyed the Lord , the God of Israel.
The Israelites had the land shared amongst them. Caleb didnt get what be deserved. This was the man who had been to spy the land and brought back a hopeful result. He spoke as God said. He had given a report that the land was ready for possession….he spoke faith instead of join the others who gave reports based on their senses…..and THEY MADE THE HEART OF PEOPLE MELT WITH FEAR…..
40 years later, Caleb remembered that his faith had got him a recognition and a promise of a better life. When life was dealing him an unfair blow, he called to remembrance his right by faith.
Many of us have co-travellers who make our heart melt with fear.
Their views and opinions rid us of the will to live. When you leave their presence , all your optimism disappears. They are the voices making you worry more about God keeping His promise to you.
They share with you , stories that touch the heart, but steal your faith. They tell you how people in your kind of situation never got better. They are co-travellers from hell, positioned on your way to make you give up on God and yourself.
Caleb’s opinion was not a popular opinion, but it was God’s opinion. It earned him the best in the land…..the same way God gave me ‘the only remaining godly man’ and my advisers had to swallow their claims.
40 years after making a choice to be different , Caleb got his promised portion.
Mine took less than 2 years.
I am sure that yours may take far less…..but you still need to fight the popular opinions that make your heart melt with fear.
DON’T let the world convince you differently from what God has spoken clearly regarding you. Only you need to believe. Only you really know what your heard.
Don’t give anyone the opportunity to steal your testimony….dont give anyone the opportunity to fill your heart with fear.
Please feel free to share
