Today’s Exhortation 19th of July 2019
Luke 24:5b “Why do you seek the living among the dead?
This phrase was uttered by two angels who met Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them when they came to the tomb to put spices on the Lord’s body.
It’s a phrase that bears repeating. “Why do you seek the living among the dead?”
In addition, the angels said (Verses 6-7); “He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ ”
What wonderful assurance! What a wonderful thing to say. And this Friday morning I am asking why you are seeking life among dead things.
You are seeking for God’s intervention but you are sitting and listening to what the world has to say. You mention that you want God’s will to be done, but you are surrounded by self-help books and looking for answers on Google.
Now the Bible mentions that in the multitude of counsellors there is safety (Proverbs 11:14) but it is important that the source of our help be godly or life-giving.
Psalms 1 speaks to us about our company and help “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.”
The angels declared, “Remember how He spoke to you…”
We can find what He said in His word.
The word of God giveth life Proverbs 3:1
My soul clings to the dust; give me life according to your word! Psalm 119:25,
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105
This is my comfort in my affliction, That Your word has revived me. (Psalm 119:50 NASB)
The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you–they are full of the Spirit and life. (John 6:63 NIV)
Many times we abandon our source and the one capable of giving us life and turn to dead things. Many times we involve ourselves in doomed and helpless things instead of staying with life.
The women had prepared spices to embalm Jesus’ body. They took their time, spent their resources and genuinely had a worthy goal. However, their pursuit was bound to be fruitless. Their aim was to embalm a body that could not be bound, that body could not be held by death or the grave. So even though their project was laudable it had failed because Jesus was alive, Hallelujah!!!
Why do you seek the living among the dead? They had gone to a tomb that held only dead things? No answers could be received in a tomb. No success could be obtained. Their venture was dead on arrival.
But glory be to God! He has all the answers we seek. He is God that cannot be bound by time, distance or space. He doesn’t need our help. He doesn’t need our solutions. He is God all by Himself.
What are you looking to achieve this week or the rest of this year? Are you seeking for answers in dead places? Or are you looking into His word which promises us life?
Are you looking for the living where life is found?
